How to Unzip a tar File using Terminal

Sometimes you may get some source code file named xxx.tar.gz, which is actually a kind of compressed file. Then how to extract it? This post will explain it in detail.

If you Google unzip tar.gz, following is what you will get:

$ tar -xvzf file.tar.gz

In fact, x, v, z, f represent different meanings themselves as following:

  • x: extract the file
  • v: “verbose”, list the extracted files one by one
